EP-039 Champions League Review USMNT and As the World Turns in Manchester

Image
Matchday 1 of 6 is done and dusted. RIP Tottenham! Jay flies solo in the Smokin Js podcast studio recapping the important Champions League matches. Why is Tottenham sunk and yet Manchester City still floating on? Liverpool vs PSG did not fail to disappoint.

Christian Pulisic is the best USMNT player ever, and he just turned 20. Just happened to score a Champions League match winner on his birthday. #special
Jay pays tribute to the week the USMNT star had, and settles a few scores with whiny Outlaws.

The special Jose Mourinho segment is back As the World Turns in Manchester. There is no limit of players in the blame game.

Are Chelsea for real? We are going to find out! It's on and popping this weekend against Liverpool, and there are no excuses or obstacles for either team.

If you fought Fabian Delph, apparently you wouldn't have to worry about kicks. Whiff!

EP-038 Champions League is Back and Jay Goes Deep in the Lounge

Image
John and Jay are back together again! The guys review the big matches from the EPL Matchday 5. Tottenham vs Liverpool and Watford vs Manchester United are discussed.

Champions League is back, and the guys are giddy with excitement for the matches in the first week of group play. Inter Milan host Tottenham and Liverpool host PSG in the most compelling match-ups of the most competitive groups. All the angles are laid out.

News! We got news even though Jose Mourinho makes no guest appearance in this podcast. Douglas Costa shares some DNA, Vertonghen goes knuckle deep, Lloris gets close with his fans, and there will be drinks spilled on the pitch during winged violence.

Stay tuned, the Jagermeister keg-orator is requested, John is challenged in his high Chelsea perch, and Jay make some questionable comments during the lounge segment. Stay tuned till the end. It's gold Jerry, I tell yeah, it's gold!

If Red Bull gives you wings, then what does RasenBallsport give you?

EP-037 USA USA USA USMNT Soccer News and EPL Weekend Preview

Image
US Mens National team continues auditions for prime time against Brazil and Mexico. RIP Paul Arriola. Weston McKennie moves closer to a solid spot in midfield. The competitive defensive back line has become a point of strength for the US squad. John and Jay get it in three beers deep.

Tax fraud or tax avoidance? Is it really the players that came up with the shell corporations and offshore accounts. Jay digs deep on the super agent Jorge Mendes, and his role in the recent Spanish tax avoidance sentences. John takes a look the senseless African stampedes, and how the past continues to repeat itself.

Tottenham vs Liverpool and Watford vs Manchester United top the list of matches this weekend. But how does Champions League affect both matches. We'll set up both matches for you, and even give you gamblers an edge.

We opened no new offshore accounts for Jorge Mendes during the production of this podcast.

EP-036 Three Unbeaten Undrawn in EPL Champions League Group Draw and USMNT

Image
The Hornets sting the Spurs! Three teams remain unbeaten and undrawn in EPL play. Are Watford and Chelsea for real as title challengers? Klopp pulling all the right levers for the Liverpool winning machine.

Everyone's favorite segment featuring Jose Mourinho is back again this week as he recites his resume for reporters. Jay climbs behind the curtain to see the reason for Jose's resume narrative.

Champion's League is back! The group stage draw is analyzed. There is one group of death this season, but it may not be the group you think.

International break brings exciting friendlies for the US Men's National Team. No Pulisic, but John Brooks is back. The squad may be without a coaching leader, but group decisions are creating a youthful competitive environment for the hopeful squad. The show gets you set up for the matches with Brazil and Mexico.

The Michael Bradley fan zone has been moved from the stadium to the elementary school gym.

EP-035 English Premier League Oh Jose Mourinho and Yedlin USMNT

Image
Matchday three is done and dusted. John and Jay take a look at the important matches of the weekend. Manchester United lose to Spurs. Watford continue their run against Crystal Palace. New Castle comes close to points hosting Chelsea. And Arsenal get three from a lackluster West Ham side.

News! With Jose Mourinho in the Premier League we always have news! The special Jose Mourinho segment is back again as the guys listen in and analyze the post match press conference staring the greatest manager EVER. John gives updates on Michael Keen's head injury, Burnley's Europa League qualification campaign, and Hung Min Son's bid to avoid military service with a Gold medal at the Asian Games.

The guys end the show setting up the next week of English Premier League action. Surprisingly, Arsenal and Chelsea were both left out of this weeks previews.

Turns out, the Asian Games have nothing to do with race. The Kick from the Spot Podcast is all about education.

Arsenal Emery Ozil and the Transfer Window

Emery left Ozil off the starting lineup over the weekend.  As listeners to this show know I have been calling for Ozil to be subbed, left out, and generally reigned in as an Arsenal staple.  There was something strange about this benching.  It came with a qualifier, he was sick.  Ill.  Unavailable.

I jumped out of my seat to see Arsenal was going to try a midfield without the lethargic, turnover prone German.  My theory that Emery was confidently testing and experimenting with his squad.  A long term approach to his coaching position.  Refreshing in modern football I thought.  And required after a 22 year coaching stint by Arsene Wenger.  Emery is taking his time to get his feet settled.  Kicking the tires in real time.

The rough English media already had a conspiritorial narrative ready for Emery:
Ozil left the team and facility on Saturday because he was pissed he was left
out of the lineup. He responded: "Maybe in English it is difficult to explain,
but first, why is this informa…

Lots of news this week including Europa League action and the USMNT flirting with a dual national.

Jay created a new segment featuring Jose Mourinho. It's lit. Now the guys will keep track of Jose each week on his destined thrill ride to implosion at Manchester United. English book makers have him as the odds on favorite currently to be the first manager sacked in the EPL.

Manchester United vs Tottenham is the featured match this week. But Jay can't help but throw in the Arsenal match as well. John and Jay break it all down. #Enjoy.

Jamie Vardy's leg was not used inappropriately during the recording of this podcast.

EP-031 Summer Transfer Window Heats Up EPL Around the Corner

Image
The Summer transfer window is almost over. John and Jay are back talking English Premier League player movement. Which squads have bolstered their line-up, and which squads have been left out in the summer sun without protection? Liverpool, Manchester City, Leicester City, Everton, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, West Ham, Tottenham, and Burnley all get the Kick from the Spot white glove treatment. John thinks Liverpool and Everton are the big winners this summer. Jay is excited about the Arsenal summer purchases and Leicester City's addition with the cash sale of Mahrez.

After the top ten teams are fully vetted, John and Jay take a look at the transfer rumors hitting the wires at the end of the transfer window. What rumors are true, and what were created by a 10 year old American Arsenal fan?

Jay recently posted a blog in which he professed his love for a young Arsenal player. Things get weird when he includes his love letter at the end of this podcast. Don't mis…

Matteo Guendouzi: A Love Letter

Image
First, this is awkward, but it must be addressed. Hector, it was several years ago I spotted you from across the pitch. It was preseason. Your youthful enthusiasm and talent lit up the pitch. Stretching runs forward from a wide position with an unexpected pace were finished off with precision crosses that peppered the opponent's 18 yard box. Your boyish charm and wide-eyed innocence were a delight. "He's going to start!" I exclaimed before a serious ball had been kicked for Arsenal.

Since that time you have become a staple in the starting 11. Your boyish charm has been replaced by a mature metal of vigor and intensity. You've grown facial hair, presented the world with your version of a man bun, and even inked a full sleeve. Alas Hector, we've grown apart. You have amassed 1.5 million followers on Twitter. No longer are you the prospect I spotted on the side of the pitch, but a full blown soccer star. I must let you go, and share you with the worl…

EP-030 World Cup Final Review Potpourri

The World Cup Final was all about bad breaks in the first half for Croatia. John and Jay get to the bottom of the two controversial plays that put Croatia down when they were playing so well. How much should VAR (video assistant replay) be used in these important matches?

FIFA handed out the golden hardware for the World Cup. There is a soft side to one of these awards. Attempts at comedy and mean spirited remarks rule the pod in the end. Don't give in to World Cup fatigue! Listen to the final Kick from the Spot podcast World Cup edition.

EP-028 World Cup Quarterfinal Review and Semifinal Preview

John is back in the Smokin Js podcast studio with Jay to celebrate a fantastic World Cup 2018 Quarterfinal Round.

The semifinals are set with France versus Belgium and Croatia versus England. How did they get there and what can you expect?

Have you wondered what the announcers are talking about when they mention the goal keeper can't "come off the line" during kicks from the spot? We have a special training ground segment just for you.

We may not have Ronaldo, Messi, and Chicharito, but the star power of Mbappe, Griezmann, Hazard, Kane, DeBruyne, and Modric will light up the semifinal round. Some are saying it's the best World Cup ever! Even without hyperbole, it's been pretty darn fantastic.

Believe it or not, Neymar was not injured during the production of this podcast (although it seemed so).

World Cup 2018 Structure and Bracket

Check out the accompanying podcast here.

FIFA decides based on their metrics and rankings of nations the number of berths from each continental zone. This is how 2018 will look.

UEFA Europe - 14
CAF Africa- 5
AFC Asia - 4.5
CONMEBOL South America - 4.5
CONCACAF North, Central and Caribbean - 3.5
OFC - Oceana - .5

The fifth team from Asia (Australia) entered a playoff against the fourth placed team from CONCACAF (Honduras).
The top team from Oceana (New Zealand) entered a playoff against the fifth place team from CONMEBOL (Peru).

32 teams entered into the 2018 World Cup.

A draw determined the make-up of 8 groups of 4 nations. The draw was weighted or seeded by creating 4 pots of 8 nations starting with the
host country and then from top to bottom based on FIFA rankings. Then from there a nation was selected out of each pot for a group. This
artificially separated the nations at the top and bottom from eachother.

Even though everything is by the numbers, FIFA chose to label the grou…

EP-022 Champions League Final Review USMNT Friendly Training Ground Supporter Etiquette

The English Premier League is quickly becoming the most popular soccer league on the planet.  In America we have more access to the EPL than any other league thanks to the NBC coverage.  With no geographic ties to the region, American fans have the opportunity to choose the Premier League club to support versus being born into a supporter group.

USMT vs Paraguay Friendly - A New Chapter

Image
On March 27th in North Carolina at 7:30 EST on Fox Sports 1 the United State Men's National team will host South American rival Paraguay in a friendly match.  This match comes under a dark cloud still looming over United States soccer as World Cup 2018 will come and go without US participation.  It will take time for American Outlaws to cleanse the pallet of qualification failure, and the chaotic leadership the organization felt in the past year, but this friendly may be just what the doctor ordered.

The 22 man roster for the friendly was recently announced.  US Soccer is putting their youth front and center.  Of the 22 men called up, they represent 12 different leagues and 10 countries.  Only one third of the players are signed and playing in Major League Soccer.  5 of the players are currently signed and playing in the top leagues of Europe.  Despite the youth, this is a formidable and exciting roster presented for the mostly meaningless friendly.

This is exactly what the USMNT …
